When pets urinate on carpet, the pet urine soaks deep into the fibers and dries into a sticky, syrupy substance similar to honey. If accidents happen in the same area over and over, or if you have a large pet, the urine can even penetrate completely through the carpet and into the underlying pad.

To illustrate why that’s a problem, imagine pouring honey onto a bare concrete or plywood subfloor and then carpeting over it. How would you clean up the honey? It would be impossible. That’s the challenge you face if your pet has been urinating on your carpet.

It’s also why over-the-counter products and do-it-yourself solutions rarely work. They are topical treatments that have no effect on urine that has soaked deep into the carpet backing or into the pad.

How does this process work? And how do we know exactly where pet urine deposits are located?

First, we use an ultraviolet light and a special electronic device to precisely locate pet urine deposits. If the problem isn’t too bad, we can treat it topically. We apply our special mixture to the carpet, allow it to dwell, and then rinse it out with hot filtered water. This removes urine and cleans the carpet at the same time.

If the damage is severe, we mark each urine deposit so we know exactly where the problem spots are. Then we saturate each spot with our special mixture, allowing it to penetrate all the way into the pad beneath the carpet. After several minutes, we use a special tool called a water claw to extract the cleaning solution along with the urine it has liquefied. We finish by rinsing the carpet with hot filtered water.

For extreme urine damage, the pad underneath the carpet may need to be replaced. Pad replacement is not a service we offer, but we can refer you to a carpet installer who does.

As you can see, quite a bit of work goes into fixing problems caused by pet stains and odors, which is why over-the-counter products don’t usually work. They aren’t strong enough to liquefy old urine deposits, nor do they do anything to extract urine.

Note: If you own an ultraviolet light, you will still be able to find where the urine spots were after our treatment. Urine contains a protein that stains carpet with an invisible dye that can only be seen under ultraviolet light. We can completely flush out all the urine but that particular protein almost always remains. However, it is no longer urine in any way, shape or form. It is merely an element that at one time was joined with many other elements to form urine. It is as harmless as the invisible ink (the stuff that glows under a black light) used to stamp hands at amusement parks and nightclubs.
